My God It's Beautiful Outside Right Now

I woke at 4 am with a headache. My stomach is sour. My eyes are killing me. I feel like shite.

But it rained last night through this morning in the city of angels. The sun has risen and golden light is peeking through a smattering of grey clouds and low, lazy, white drifts. It's still soft outside and nothing is brilliant yet.

The air is cool and damp and wonderful. It's the first real chill of the season.

I will always love Autumn. It is the coolth of a gentle cloth on my fevered brow; it is the soothing breath; it is the cleansing balm of my soul.

I Laughed So Hard I Gave Myself A Coughing Fit: Worst Cats

It's pretty new, so I ended up reading the whole thing.

Seriously, my chest hurts right now.

Sometimes Lin likes to email me things that shut down my day. I'm in recovery over here.

Keeping It Real In The LBC

Prepare for randomness.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
House/cat sitting for some friends in a ridiculous house in a ridiculous location. I am one house back from what is technically a public, but essentially a private, beach. I am unsure about my commas in that preceding sentence.
This place is stupid. Will update with pix later. My guest bedroom has an ocean view. So does the side porch. Unreal.
~~~

It's not always about money. Only mostly. Individual taste rules all. This is an awesome  house, but I wouldn't have purchased it. For the $$$, I would have liked something altogether different. But then again, I've owned approx 0 homes to date. Maybe a house like this is something you grow into?

~~~
As I have a place to myself, I am naturally not taking care of any business and am instead marathoning stuff on Netflix. Oh, Netflix, the destroyer of all good intentions.
Watching some episodic television and I come across That Actor With The Glasgow Smile. He's playing a Scot in this one. Scottish mobster. Surprise. You know the guy? I'm gonna bet his name is Tommy something. And I'm going to bet he's Irish. Let's find out together, shall we?
Survey says: Tommy Flanagan!
This guy has done a shit ton of work. You may remember him best from Sin City, Gladiator, or a little movie called Braveheart.
Everybody remembers this scene. Primae Noctis--worst wedding gift ever.
Now brace yourselves, because I know everybody relies on Braveheart for its stunning historical accuracy, but jus primae noctis might not ever have been an actual practice.
This just in: if a white guy is telling the story, remember there's a reason it's called history.
And apparently I don't know shit (today is just full of bombshells). Msr. Flanagan was born in Glasgow, it seems. See, I thought he was Irish because his Scottish accent was so good.
Too good. I could understand him. This led me to believe it was put on, rather than natural. Perhaps it is just his Scottish-American accent. Did you know he's on Sons of Anarchy? I didn't till just now.
~~~~

Long Hair Tip #17:

If you are housesitting and wearing something just horrible because it's laundry day and ALL your necessary garments are in the wash because Hey-Noone-Will-Knock and then somebody DOES KNOCK. . .

. . . you can drape your hair over your shoulders to hide your sketchy wardrobe as well as camoflauging the fact that you have no support garments on. Which is good, because it turns out there is a construction worker convention in the courtyard.

Just saying.

~~~~
I had lots more stuff to say, but I have fallen down a hole. It started with finding that Craig Ferguson reaction gif up there.
So this is Craig's last season on The Late, Late Show. Boo. Hiss. We are losing a national treasure. (No really, he's ours. He got his citizenship and everything).
How can anyone not love Craig Ferguson? He's gorgeous and silly and All That Is Light And Good In This World. He's just a few rungs below babby kittehs. He's that amazing.
Classy.
After you've watched craigyferg for a while, you can kinda tell what voice he's using just by his facial expressions.
And the dancing. My god, the dancing.
Who's at the door? Secretariat!?!?!
I could write a whole sonnet about these damn puppets.
What's not to love.
No, seriously, what? He is adorable. I'm totally getting lost in this image search.
Then it happened.
OKAY THAT IS FRIGGING IT I HAVE HAD IT WITH THE INTERNETS WHAT THE SAM HILL IS HAPPENING HERE HOLY CRAP CRAIGYFERG IS QUOTING..
..ACK...
HE'S QUOTING...
..KAFF...WHEEZE....
HE'S PULLING A MR. PILKINGTON!!!
I CANNOT EVEN WITH THIS HOW THE EFF DID THIS HAPPEN HOLY CRAP WE ARE AT DEFCON 1 STALKER ALERT I DONT UNDERSTAND ITS LIKE HE'S INSIDE MY BRAAAAAAAAAIN
yeah, okay.
that's pretty much it.
i quit, internet.
you win.
Liveblogging The A-Team Re-Watch: Maybe It's Brilliant French Absurdist Satire?
I watched a few episodes lately and thought: why am I even liveblogging these idiotic thoughts? There's no sense to it. You can't play along at home. What is my purpose in life? WHY AM I EVEN HERE??
Well, all those pesky worries were before the glory that was S2E5 "When You Comin' Back, Range Rider?: Part 1"*.
  • * HOLY SQUEALIN SHIT I JUST SAW THE "Part 1." THAT MEANS THERE"S A "Part 2." THERE'S ANOTHER WHOLE EPISODE! IT'S LIKE CHRISTMAS!
  • Ahem, as I was saying, this ep is Western themed. I believe the Range Rider character that Murdock is dressed as is a Lone Ranger analog. In addition to Murdock's outfit as he watches Range Rider, we also have another scene with an  honest to god Injun--know him by his headband!
  • Okay, it's episodes like this that make me brilliantly paranoid. There's just no way anybody actually wrote this, took actual writing credit for this--without irony, right? I mean, this scripting isn't in earnest, right? Right?
  • Okay, it can't be in earnest b/c if it is I have to commit seppuku over the plight of humanity. I don't have the energy for hara kiri today, so we are all going to agree that this tongue-in-cheek, yes?
  • "Tongue-in-cheek." Remember how the first time you heard that phrase it didn't make any sense? How the hell is sticking your tongue into your cheek supposed to indicate humor? Wouldn't you accidentally bite your tongue while trying to tell the joke? And then it all got Explained To You how this impossible descriptor should exist, much less stand in a metaphorical shortcut to avoiding the use of any, *gasp* adjectives when trying to describe humor?
  • Well, guess what, "tongue in cheek?" It doesn't make sense. It never made sense. You were right the first time. Don't buy into the lie. Trust your instincts. Don't let the man get you down. STAY GOLDEN, PONY BOY.
  • So, what if this whole script is just the Ultimate Troll From A Privileged White Dude Writer ever?
  • Heh. I can never remember how to spell privilege. Heh, auto correct on that one too. Yup, never really remember, never really knew, because I NEVER REALLY HAD ANY!! I'M FROM THE STREET!! KEEPIN IT REAL.
  • But really, what if this writer was just like: Oh yeah. Lemme stick some stereotypes together so I can laugh my ass off. Ha, mental illness is hilarious--let's make TWO of em crazy!
  • I mean, really, get in that headspace: I like to laugh at things that are different from me! Hur dur! Because:
  • Mr. T is on a Horse, Y'all.
  • No, really. They are all in their character's version of cowboy outfits and a slow praire croon cranks up in the background and we have a 5 MINUTE MONTAGE of stunt doubles wandering around some fields astride their fierce mounts and what's even fiercer is that Mr. T stick-on Mohawk Cranial Plate thing you got hot glued to that stunt double's head i don't know how to end this sentence
  • But really, Mr. T on a Horse.**
  • No matter how funny you think this looks, A-Team Writers, you should not have done such a thing. Do you realize you just went Mr. T to the power of Horse? You have created the mythical Ultra Badass Centaur--He Who Cannot Be BeaTen.
  • Horse, people! Have respect for the Exponential Damage Potential a Horse produces. If I'd been a table topper I could make some witty remark about 12 sided die and Hit Points, but I'll not pander to you in such a way. We've too much respect between us.
  • Hannibal. Has On. Chaps.
  • Murdock has chest hair. Hey guys, remember when men had chest hair? Me too! Do you think Burt Reynolds used it all up and now nobody gets any? Guys are getting almost as conditioned as women with their legs. Lookout dudes! Don't let hair oppression happen to your gender too!
  • Dwight Schultz has on chaps, too. But they're his special plastic chaps that he watches children's shows in. And believe it or not, I mean that in the non perverted way it can't possibly come across as.
  • Dwight Schultz' Range Rider accent is amazing. Seriously, his whole voice. Did this guy do any voice acting? Seriously. Total waste if he didn't.
  • Okay, here's where I suspect a troll-y writer. The boys are staying out of sight. But wait, Amy's in trouble. Hannibal gets on the jazz and decides they have to intervene, but guess what? Everybody put on your masks, WEE R IN DISGAIZ, GAIZ. Face says, "Yeah, nobody's gonna recognize us." I feel like this could be Heavy Trolling. I also laughed out loud.
** This section was supposed to be a picture of Mr. T on a horse. But my searches were in vain. Instead, I found this. Now you will suffer, as I have suffered.
Live Blogging My Spontaneous "A-Team" Marathon
Gad bless Netflix streaming.
  • Oh, look. It's Pilot!Face who didn't get picked up for the season. Poor guy. He's like the Pete Best of the A-Team.
  • BTW, if you like the A-Team, don't do any real research into the actors and their time together. Or maybe even things they've said since then. Just, really, live the dream, man.
  • Oh, is there a horrific Asian stereotype in every production involving George Peppard?
  • Wow. Ol' George really did have movie star eyes. That blue is just. . . wowza.
Banacek, bitches!
  • Based off my knowledge of late 70s to early 80s serial television, I'm going to venture that G.Pepp was a cigar fan. On the company dime.
  • Damn, Mr. T is helluva tough. But he's always got time for the kids!
  • Awww, Murdock. How much fun is a role like this? Mr. T was the coolest, Face was the prettiest, Hannibal was the jazziest, but my fave was always Murdock.
  • You know, when I saw The A Team (2010) movie, I thought that Bradley Cooper was just going way overboard on the Face casting. Bradley Cooper's body, in that film, is stupefying. Thank god they limited his shirtless screen time, because I Do Not Even Have Thinking Brain Explodey How Is That Even Possible With Eating and Muscle Mass Oh Lord I Need To Lie Down. Really.
This is ridiculous.
  •  In addition to this fact is that Bradley Cooper is a disturbingly pretty man. He is far prettier than I have ever managed to be. It's a little unnerving and unnatural.
We are not even going to talk about his Hair Fu. But it is considerable.
  •  All of which is an incredibly long winded way of saying that I Thought He Had A Real Pretty Mouth and it was a bit much. But then I start my A-Team walk down memory lane. And you guys know what? Dirk Benedict was ridiculously good looking. I can't even find pictures to do him justice. It's just silly. So, mea culpa 2010 crew--you were spot on the money.
Newsflash: World Full Of Beautiful Men, Trend Continues
  • "On the jazz"---totally had forgotten that.
  • Those mofos just escaped jail with lawn chairs, trash bags, dozen or so hair dryers, and two long ass extension cords. Seems legit.
TBD....Gotta roll.
Post True Detective Finale: Open Letter To Nic Pizzolatto and the Cast & Crew
Dear Nic P,
You clever thing. You told me how it was going to end. I knew how it was going to end. Somehow you wrung surprise out of a foregone conclusion. Few things are more delicious in story listening than realizing your expectancy of the narrative has been both right and wrong at the same time.
Thanks for the wild ride. Thanks for not sucker punching us. Thanks for only breaking our hearts as much as was necessary. And thanks for the unexpected hope.
Cast & Crew,
You kick ass. Directing, set design, wardrobe, lighting, sound, that little acting part--what a first class production.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
This series has been a phenomenal experience. I now have to blather to assuage my feels.
The thematic balance has been incredible. They spend the shows telling you exactly how to watch the shows and what's coming next. Time is a flat circle. We've been here before and we will be here again.
Rust Cohle didn't just stare into the abyss, he saw what the Monsters see when they stare.
Woody Harrelson being tearfully "all right" was amazing. I thought we had lost him to Carcosa for a minute there.
What was it about Rust's experience in the void that comforted him? Was it the memory of love, that he carried that feeling with him? Was he ready to die, but the love of his daughter made him want to live? Was it knowing that the last thing he felt was love, and this made all the bad shit a lot more understandable? Was it knowing that his daughter must have felt the same love when she died?
Me: Ah! They're flipping each other the bird again. That's true love, right there.
My Brother: Uh, I think you might have a weird definition of true love.
Loved all the Jesus-ish touches with Rust from the showdown to the hospital. It wasn't too pointed, just lovely suggestions, visual wisps.
McMatt managed to get a shirt partially off. I have no objections to this.
I was reminded tonight that my visual perceptions and conclusions about life and my experiences ARE NOT everybody else's. And that mine might seem really weird to some people. I just forget that, sometimes.
It's 1 am. I need to stop thinking about all this. I need to go to bed.
Today was a good day.
Freak Out - Sobbing - WTF - OMG - I Don't Even Understand, And You Will Think This Is Silly
Today, while pleasant in aspect, was not my day. Against plans, I decided to roll.
Now, there's only one bowling alley in town, and it suits me just fine, because they are the best. It's old, cracked, well oiled (before league) and familiar.
It's the kind of place I can leave my wallet in the pit and hit the restroom and I never even worry about someone stealing my shit.
Say what you will about the South, but this Just Happened:
I'm rolling with three different balls, trying to find a happy medium. Three beers and five sets in, I'm thinking "I should really get the guy to tell me the weights on these balls, so I'll know what to look for, though it's probably the elusive 10lb ball, talked of in myths and legends.
The owner walks over to me and says, "Girl, how many balls you trying to bowl with?"
I explain my situation, which is: I'm outta shape, I have small hands, and the light balls don't carry enough weight to strike. But the heavy balls kill my hip. (Bowlers know).
I mention I used to bowl with a green house ball, not the yellow letter 12 pounder, but the other one. He knows it: the 9 lb green. Gone the way of the dodo, almost.
"Well, lemme see. Now I have an idea," he says. Disappears into the back (the sacred holy bowling ball space). Halfway through my fifth sixth seventh whatever set, he hands me a ball. Pink, blue, and black, like a livid bruise.
"This is 10lbs, try it."
I have a beer and roll a little more. My hip is killing me. My knees are tired. But I've got a good grip on this 10lb. It's not the final weight I'll bowl with, but I can work with it. Put a wicked spin on it a few times without really trying.
I finish up one game and one beer over my original intent. It's all good. I've been trying to make this a McConauDay, though I have quite been able to pull it off. My hip hurts. My knees ache. I'll probably be done in for sure tomorrow. I still haven't eaten. I still haven't cleaned the room or fridge. I still haven't located the Christmas gift cards that I just realized today were missing.
You might imagine it's hard to get Zen and Bowl Right with a brain like this. You'd be right.
Anyhoo, I bowl my final and break 120, which was my goal. A sad goal, but still. I'm thinking crazy things, like how I should really get my own ball, even though I'm totally broke-ass and didn't even try to do that when I had money.
I carry the ball back up to the front, because it's obviously not a regular house ball: it's all shiny and pretty.
The owner cashes me out, and we talk of California (which everybody wants to dog on) and Zen bowling and the world. He pulls out a box and puts the ball I've been using into it. He slides the box across the counter to me.
"Here ya go. Somebody donated this so go ahead and have it. I know you'll use it."
Dude.
Seriously.
He just *gave* me a bowling ball.
I almost cried.
And then I did when I made it home.
I'm sure it seems silly, but good things never happen to me. I'm never rewarded for my loyalty or patience. The surprises in my life are mostly, almost all, negative. I'm not a lucky person.
But today I got a bowling ball for free. From a guy who remembers me even though I don't live here anymore. At an alley I almost didn't go to today.
Fuck a duck. I'll happily take my small miracles where I can.
Angst Whisperer
I don't know how I keep on ending up in the position of talking people down, calming things up, etc. I was tech support and babby support and emotional support today at work.
And let me tell you, if I'm your tech support, you are right well hosed. But, I must note that my solutions worked, and allowed a new employee to get some work done in the office instead of melting down while the boss and the official tech guy were out.
Tech Hint #28: Check to make sure all switches are set to "ON." Really helps.
I got instant karmic reward by going to a long, lazy lunch with my Science Bro! Yay! Happiness! SCIENCE!
Science Bro!
Awww hells yeah.
 Having a Science Bro is awesome because of exchanges like this:
SB: Why don't you eat beef again?
HF: Prions, man.
SB: Oh yeah. Those things are terrifying.
Next subject! And my SB was working some zombie theories and actually referenced kuru. It struck a very nostalgic chord for me--I hadn't heard anybody say that in ages.
Then back to office, commiserate with my Brother From Another Mother on what a crazy day it's been, pick up computer, and head straight to my bro's comfy leather couch.
With recliner.
Which just goes to show that I really haven't much at all to complain about.
Like Letting The Air Out of a Balloon
I'm picking through my massive, yet never quite complete, medical records as I have One Last Doctor's Appointment to see if I can get any help for all the wonderful bodily ailments I have as a result of being healed. Oh Irony, you so crazy.
And I had a thought that I've never had before: what would my life be like if that biopsy had come back clean? What would my life be like now if I'd never had cancer?
I can't really think past that point. It seems strange that I never thought of it before. All I can imagine is the horrific stress of the day I got the diagnosis (soooo many things going wrong that day)--and I think, "Well, my sister and I probably would have had a better time during her visit." I do not believe I was ideal company during that time.
Isn't it strange that I've never even considered the alternative, what the past 2 years would have been like if this didn't happen? I'm sure that says something about me, but I'll be damned if I know what it is.
Jeremy Effin Clarkson
Watching TV for the first time months, run across a Top Gear episode.
Clarkson has hooked up a V-8 engine to some kind of industrial mixer. Into this mixture he has placed raw beef, Tabasco, some brown drink, a cement brick, and some other stuff.
To activate the mixer he turned a key. To increase the mix speed he had an accelerator pedal.
James May actually sipped some of the final concoction.
This show is insanely awesome and awesomely insane.
Checking In
The almost white noise of traffic, one street off a main drag, filters in the screen door along with sunlight and a light breeze.
It's another ridiculously beautiful day in SoCal, with Handy J singing an interestingly Country/Western themed melange as he does the dishes in the kitchen.
Returned from a trip to Denver--another location with beauty and nice weather to spare. I was lucky to escape there with my possessions intact, as my compatriots were of the rascally sort.
On this trip I learned it is incredibly hard, if  not impossible, to make sexual harassment charges stick against people below the age of five.
Which is a shame, because those little buggers know it and there's some real shady stuff going on out there.
If she no lika your answer, she eata your face!
I'm sure everybody has seen this, but just in case. This is we can show the aliens to stop them from wiping us out. He's Earth's only hope:
http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-collections/428467/surprise-guests
That's one damn catchy song. Save us SCobie,  you're our only hope.
Visiting with the Woosters made me realize how much I like kids and cats. I actually love them.
I miss them when they aren't around. I just don't love them enough to have my own. Other people's will suffice.
The Wolverine was a fun movie. Hugh Jackman is so immensely likeable and pushes the limits of belief with the physicality he brings to the role. (Physicality = 889793243234j937 lbs of muscle).
I continue to be delighted and a little awed by how Marvel is pulling all the threads of their movies together. Their universe is so disjointed, in terms of who owns rights to what. And yet. . . there's always that cameo or that end credit scene or that Stan Lee appearance.
By the way, did Stan Lee appear in The Wolverine? I don't remember seeing him. The movie itself was a competent update to the original Wolverine mini series involving his time in Japan.
I would like to take a moment to protest, again, that the Origins official back story of Wolverine blows. I was so disappointed when I got those comics. They got it all wrong, destroyed the mystery, limited his experiences, etc. Fanboy wank.
But seriously, how much cooler would The Wolverine been if set in feudal Japan(AS THE BABY JEBUS INTENDED) and he was a samurai? If you don't think that's cool, then we probably shouldn't hang out.
I'm on a new med regimen which has me pinging between hibernation sleep and carsick jitters. Bleh. I'll document my travails for posterity some other time. For now, I find myself in the wacky world of self medication and monitoring. Which, as I pause to reflect on it, has kinda been what's been going on all along. Hmm.
I have so much to do, and you know what?
The NFG Tour continues!!!!
 In a world. . . where no Effs are Geed. . . what becomes possible?
Marriage Has Been Equalized, Texan Wimmens Rock
Or it's at least being shit on in one less state.
As my friend pointed out so eloquently today, this shouldn't be a discussion about gay marriage rights, it should be a discussion about equal marriage rights.
And some people tried to break the rules to get their way, and got their asses handed to them. Go 'head on Wendy!
And now that marriage is available to all consenting adults in the state of CA, I can rescind my conscientious objecting ban on marriage in general.
That's right---I vowed (privately at some time that no one knows) that I would never marry until my fellow statesmen could marry.
So, you know what that means. . .
. . . Oh man. I'm gonna have to move to Utah.
Spreading The Joy
This is want I want to do for a living. So very much.
Description from Wikipedia:
QI (Quite Interesting) is a British comedy panel game television quiz show created and co-produced by John Lloyd, hosted by Stephen Fry, and featuring permanent panelist Alan Davies.
Most of the questions are extremely obscure, making it unlikely that the correct answer will be given. To compensate, points are awarded not only for right answers, but also for interesting ones, regardless of whether they are right or even relate to the original question.
Conversely, points are deducted from a panelist who gives "answers which are not only wrong, but pathetically obvious,"typically answers that are generally believed to be true but in fact are misconceptions. Points are also often deducted if an obvious joke answer is given. These answers are known as forfeits, usually indicated by a loud klaxon, flashing lights, and the incorrect answer being displayed on screen as a form of humiliation.
SEE Stephen Fry try to play school master and fail fabulously.
SEE the XL episodes where all the naughty bits are left in.
SEE Alan Davies subtly undermine the game.
SEE Rob Brydon advance his faux science and mock seriousness.
SEE David Mitchell devolve into a ball of "angry logic."
SEE Sean Lock get pissy and bored with intelligent participants.
SEE Jimmy Carr deadpan through every innuendo.
SEE Phil Jupitus and Bill Bailey sing, dance, flirt, and just be AWESOME.
 But don't take my word for it:
 And of course, THIS happened. I love to see a grown man cry:
Watch This Now: Jekyll
Lord have mercy. Woke up at 1:30 this morning for No Good Reason.
Then I Fell Down a Tumblr Hole trying to capture an image, gif, quote, something, that would help me convince people to watch this show.
Oh Tumblr, thou art a labyrinth of obsession and sublimated desires. You are scary. And I kind of love you.
Anyhoodle, at approx 4:24 am I gave up, grabbed my Pepsi from the fridge, and committed to a substandard post that will hopefully still be persuasive.
*****************
This has been popping up in my Netflix recommendations for ages. When will I learn my lesson and listen them?
Jekyll is a six part mini series (it's actually considered a whole season but I'm not even gonna go into the vagaries of British television right now). And it's written by Steven Moffat. So let that be the warning and the encouragement.
The clever storyline, while "modernizing" the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novella, really acts more as a sequel to the original work. It's a deft little bit of plotting that allows more believability for our pop culture saturated, meta-aware psyches. It's darkly funny, tense, beautifully paced and visually interesting.
It's also acted wonderfully. James Nesbitt, as the lead, as the is at turns gleefully deranged, achingly heartbroken, desperately self loathing, disturbingly violent and even more disturbingly appealing.
The supporting cast are strong and fully formed characters. Special nods to Denis Lawson (Wedge Antilles!) whose dry delivery makes sandpaper seem soggy. And Gina Bellman knocked it out of the park--rising to every challenge and giving the other characters a credible, some may even say equally intimidating, foil.
tl;dr?
ZOMG!11!! Jekyll is da bomb ass shizzy, fo realz! It's streaming on Netflix, so suckahs got no reason to miss it.
In closing, and with a blind eye turned towards the multitudinous disturbing things this indicates about my psyche, consider this:
Awww Shucks
My friends decided I needed a little pick me up. So, inspired by their trip to Bass Pro Shop, I was the surprised recipient of a drive-by-rednecking.
The meal also included some Honey Kettle Fried Chicken, which is damn fine chicken. I am in love with the goblet--it even has its own lid.
Many thanks to LinLin and HJ. I didn't know I needed a pickmeup till you picked me up. :)
